Gee and Jordan Annotations

This first annotation is a question type annotation. I asked this in the Gee post, as he said that, “at any moment we are using language we must say or write the right thing in the right way while playing the right social role…” and in my eyes, it seemed a little extreme and an exaggerated way of saying you must act the right way. And I asked this question to see if he actually meant it or if it was simply exaggeration.

This next annotation is an extending type annotation. It is meant to extent Gee’s thoughts of how, when the women was not fit for the middle class job interview simply because of the way she spoke, it is quite literally a very mild form of discrimination. And I pointed this out to show that.

The third annotation was another question type annotation. Jordan said that Black English is an “endangered species”, and I asked if that was still true to this day. Have things changed? Even with the influence of AAVE?

The final annotation was a comprehension annotation. I found it extremely interesting to think of how the Black students for the first time saw, written out, how they speak on a board. It’s almost equivalent to seeing yourself in the mirror for the first time, or a picture of yourself. It is an everyday thing you do when you speak, and to never notice certain characteristics is incredible to think about.
